      THE EX KILLER

      INTRODUCTION

      My name is Angela Gray.

My life changed when my mom died.

It put harsh events of my life into action.

      But I won’t start there.

It hurts too much to start there.

I’ll just pick a much later day to start my story.

Any day but the day she died.

      CHAPTER ONE

I rolled my eyes after reading, ‘Weclome to Colum, The Prettiest Place in Alabama’. This huge brown sign with bold white lettering spanned the width of Main Street before going into downtown. A week ago Mayor Lydia Franklin, city council members, and most of the residents attended the big time sign unveiling. Tanie Howard and I showed up because there wasn’t anything else better to do. She noticed the misspelled word before everyone else did. She whispered in my ear and pointed to it. We were nearly on the ground laughing, bent over and in tears. All those highly educated people at the ceremony and not a single one of them checked the sign. People thought we were rude for laughing at such an important occasion. When others finally noticed and
the Mayor was carefully told the problem, the ceremony came to an abrupt but hilarious end. At least to me and Tanie, it was hilarious. The Mayor in her snappy red outfit barreled off the stage in disgust, with an entourage of butt kissers behind her. Tanie and I had to make a quick exit, as well, because the Sheriff and his deputies were giving us real dirty looks.

Tonight we drove into town just to look at that stupid sign again. The car was full with me, Tanie, her date Jimmy, and another guy name Milton. He was not my date; just want to make that perfectly clear. We laughed so hard at that sign. It just never gets old.

Milton was the only one that didn’t laugh. That’s because he was confused. He was mentally disabled, seriously. He tapped me on my shoulder, which I absolutely couldn’t stand, and asked me what we were laughing at. If I had to explain it, it wasn’t funny. I stopped laughing. I shook my head and waved him off.

We were coming from a party at the National Guard Armory, and Tanie blazed in and out of that little town center in no time. Good thing the police was nowhere to be found. Tanie wanted to go to her apartment with the guys, but I wasn’t feeling that at all, no way, not with Milton. I don’t know who Milton thought he was going to sleep with, but I knew for damn sure it wasn’t going to be me.

Tanie thought Milton and I would make a great couple. What in the world could he do for me and why would she think that? He stayed with his mother because he couldn’t take care of himself. He doesn’t have a job, and he’s helpless. He’s not a bad person, but there was no way I was going to date him. Tanie pissed me off trying to hook us up. She wouldn’t date him. So, I don’t know why she’s trying to push him on me.

Tanie always got the good looking guys like Jimmy. He had light brown eyes that you couldn’t turn away from, and he had the wash board muscle stomach, and he was tall. He was so sexy and spoke with intelligence. He made me hot just looking at him. I like a man I can look up to and wrap my arms around. I just wished Jimmy was interested in me. I wish any guy like him was interested in me.

Jimmy touched Tanie’s face gently and she smiled at him accepting his show of affection. Milton decided he was going to try and touch my face, too. I blocked his hand and scooted away from him. Then he tried to reach up my skirt, and I slapped him in the face. It wasn’t much of a hit because I was sitting next to him, but my hand began to sting anyway. Tanie nearly drove off the road looking back at me because she heard what I did.

“Ow!” Milton grabbed his cheek and tears welled up in his eyes. Great, now I felt like a bully, but damn, he was getting on my nerves! Why couldn’t he be like Jimmy?

Tanie said with a stunned look on her face, “Oh my God, Angela, don’t hit him!”

      Jimmy chuckled.

“I don’t want him putting his hands on me…AT ALL!” I was still trying to scoot closer to the window. I demanded, “Just take me home, Tanie. I’m not dealing with this tonight.”

Milton looked at me still holding his cheeks with an accusatory look. That’s all I know, he was going to get slapped again regardless if he knew better or not. I bet by the time I was done, he would understand I didn’t want him in any kind of way. I was not playing. I wished Tanie left him at the Armory. He got there on his own, and he could have gotten home the same way.

Tanie couldn’t get to my apartment fast enough. I wanted out of there and away from Milton. The car didn’t even come to a complete stop before I bailed out the car. This was the one time I was glad to be back in my raggedy apartment complex. Tanie got out of the driver’s seat trying to get me to come over to where she was. I just wanted to go to bed. She stumbled over to me, and we used each other to steady ourselves. She smelled like flowers and alcohol as she leaned in closer to me.

“Milton has always had a crush on you.” She said, “You really should try to be nice to him.”

“You be nice to him!” I said as I pushed her away, “You should have left him at the party!” My alcohol buzz was replaced by aggravation. Why couldn’t she just let me be? Just because she had someone to sleep with didn’t mean I was desperate for someone. There wasn’t anything I wanted in that car for damn sure now, and I wasn’t going to appease her or Milton.

She looked into the car where the guys were waiting. She remarked, “Okay, we’ll go to breakfast instead. We don’t have to go back to my apartment. We’ll go to the diner that’s open all night and have breakfast. Afterwards, I’ll bring you back home.”

I still didn’t want to be around Milton, but I was hungry. Food was hard to come by sometimes. So, I agreed. “I’m going inside to change first. I don’t want him reaching up my skirt anymore.”

Tanie has been my best friend since we were kids. I can’t remember a time when I didn’t know her. She has always been confident, a natural born trouble maker, and a force of life. She’d never had any problems telling anything and everything as she sees it. Tanie was very smart, keen to the world beyond her own. She was a good balance for me. She made my life more interesting, more fun, and I thought more of her than my own sisters. She was a very loyal friend. I trusted her without a doubt.

Tanie was about my size, average height, shoulder-length black hair with brown eyes. She was more shapely and healthier. She had a dark, smooth complexion, thin nose, and thin wide lips. Her facial features expressed confidence even when she was angry or sad. I never told her, but I thought she was beautiful. Sometimes I wished I looked like her, had her independent life, and her unabridged knowledge.

I unlocked the front door and walked through the many beer cans and alcohol bottles that decorated the living room floor and coffee table. This was the norm in my apartment, to have garbage all over the place. The television was the only thing that lit up the living room.

My sister’s 51 years old boyfriend, Pritchard Porter, was lying on the sofa snoring at the ceiling. I hated Pritchard. He was a nasty old man. He used to date my mom before she died. After she passed on, he remained in the apartment, and I guess Andrea, my older sister, took her place. Andrea is 25 years old. I think she is just as nasty for being with him, but my opinions in that household didn’t count, didn’t matter, and didn’t exist.

My sister, Andrea, was in the living room, too, but she slept on her stomach on the floor between the coffee table and the sofa. She was a serious alcoholic and drug addict. She drinks whatever she gets her hands on, and she uses meth. She might have moved on to something different, but as far as I knew meth was her drug of choice. I’ve never actually seen her shoot up, but I’ve seen that stuff in the apartment. I don’t know how she lives like that. There was no changing her habits or talking sense to her. Andrea was stubborn, and she did whatever she wanted. I came to that understanding a long time ago, and that’s why I never tried to help her. A lot of people tried to help her, but she turned them all away in her own harsh way. No one tries anymore.

I kicked the bottles and cans out of the way as I walked through the living room to the short cruddy hallway that lead to the bedroom I shared with my younger sister, Olivia. I didn’t want to wake her. So, I slowly opened the bedroom door and tried to slip in without being too loud. When I did, I got a surprise, a horrible surprise.

Olivia was completely naked, straddling my boyfriend Jason! All of the covers were scrunched at the bottom. He was sitting up halfway using his abdomen and butt muscles to intensify their bodily contact, and he was intently looking up at her. His mouth was open, and her breasts brushed against his cheeks and lips. Olivia was moaning and sweating, and she was grinding hard against him. Their bodies were responding to one another like they belonged permanently. Neither one of them realized I was standing in the door. My initial shock was anger. My stomach became unsettled. Then she screamed in ecstasy, and I snapped like a crazed lunatic!

“WHAT THE HELL!” I yelled. Before I knew it I was charging them. Jason pushed Olivia off on the far side of the bed, and I went to swinging on him just as quickly as I reached him. He pushed me to the floor on the other side of the bed, and I landed on my back.
I was winded from hitting the floor so hard. I slowly got up only to see his naked ass running out of the room. I tried to catch him, but I fell in the hallway trying to run in high heels. That mutha...!

I kicked off my shoes, and I ran passed Pritchard who was now standing in the middle of the living room. I didn’t even stop to explain. By the time I got to the porch, Tanie was on the sidewalk laughing, bent over, and Jimmy and Milton were getting out of the car looking down the sidewalk into the dark.

Jason was long gone, but I knew where he went. His mother stayed a few doors down in the same apartment complex. I wasn’t about to go to his apartment and cause a scene. Jason’s mother was mean as hell, and she didn’t like anyone messing with her son; no matter what he did to anyone else. Plus, she hated my guts. I went storming back inside my apartment, totally embarrassed and mad as fire. I walked passed a speechless Pritchard, but I knew he wanted to say something. I didn’t have time. There was someone else I needed to take care of.

When I got back to the bedroom, Olivia was already in her night gown and brushing her naturally curly hair; like nothing had happened. She had a nonchalant look on her face like what she did was no big deal. Was she for real? This was my baby sister, and she was having sex with my boyfriend! I mean, grinding, feeling it to the bone kind of sex, and she enjoyed it. I stared at her waiting for an explanation. She just kept on brushing her hair. That little bitch really thought she was going to get away with sleeping with my boyfriend. I could feel the heat in my face burning. I went over and pushed her as hard as I could.

Olivia turned on me after she regained her balance and said mockingly, “What is that? I’m not scared of you anymore, Angela!”
