He saw her from across a crowded ballpark and knew she was about to change his life.

Yes, he realizes just how cliché that really is, but the moment his eyes locked on her, he knew that she was the one.

At least, the one that royally screwed him over. The one responsible for his demotion and the subsequent disciplinary action taken against him before he’d even gotten out of the probationary period with Kilgore Police Department.

It all started with a kiss.

Saylor Rae Spada tried to mind her business. She also tried to not get involved in petty disputes.

However, from the moment she saw him sitting next to her at a professional baseball game, a game she didn’t even want to be at but was dragged to by her blind date, she couldn’t look away.

Then the Kiss Cam came on, featuring none other than her and the handsome stranger.

Without missing a beat, he kissed her.

Then her blind date decided to pull a knife and try to stab him.

From that point forward, she’s done nothing but cause him trouble.

Trouble that he’s starting to find increasingly adorable.

      -Lock’s secret thoughts

      Lock

“Come on, hurry up,” I rushed my sister. “We’re going to miss the first pitch.”

      Ares sighed, long and loud.

“I don’t even know why you made me come to this,” she muttered.

“Because you like baseball,” I told her bluntly.

“I like baseball,” she agreed. “I don’t like this team.”

      That was true.

Ares loved the Longview Lumberjacks, who were playing today. But she despised the other team—mainly her ex-boyfriend turned professional baseball player, Ryan McMillan.

I’d once liked Ryan, thinking he was a great guy and perfect for my sister. Then he’d gotten a big head while in college, which had turned into an even bigger head when he was picked up by the minor league team for the Devil Rays.

Needless to say, I was clearly feeling the same afflictions that Ares was feeling.

On one hand, I would’ve loved—loved—to go to this game by myself. But I knew, despi
te seeing Ryan, she’d have a great time.

“They’re taking the field,” I said, eyes ahead of me. “Hurry.”

I think a lot of Ares’ reluctance stemmed from the fact that we had front row seats, right behind the plate. That would mean that Ryan would have no choice but to look at her.

And I knew that he’d see her.

      Ryan always saw her.

My eyes were now so focused on our seats that when she turned around, I nearly went sailing straight down the steps and straight onto my face.

Luckily, my sister broke my fall.

“Jesus Christ,” Ares said. “I said I was hurrying.”

      She was.

Ares had on a pair of high heels that made her legs look like they came up to her neck. And since she didn’t wear high heels all that often, she was having trouble walking in them.

Again, the heels were for Ryan’s benefit.

      “Sorry,” I lied. “Tripped.”

Ares huffed something underneath her breath and went back to walking—awfully, might I add—and by the time we arrived at our seats the first two outs had been made.

I watched her the entire time I walked, and the closer I got, the more my heart started to pound.

She was sitting in her chair, her feet up in the seat and her arms around her upraised knees, and her eyes were now straight ahead, watching the game.

She was beautiful—at least what I could see of her seeing as she was in a protective ball.

She had long, curly black hair that was in a wild disarray all around her shoulders. It cascaded down her back and into the seat. It was also falling behind the seat and tangling with the woman’s sandals in the seat behind her.

Not that that woman noticed seeing as she had the largest glass of beer that the ballpark sold—and it was halfway gone.

Ares went in first, and that was when I realized that I would be sitting next to the woman I couldn’t stop staring at.

      Fuck.

I didn’t notice anyone or anything around me.

Instead, I focused solely on her as I made my way to my seat behind my slow as fuck sister.

“Excuse me,” Ares said to the man beside the woman.

The man leered at Ares, and I instantly decided to hate him.

      Was he with the woman?

I hoped not, seeing as he was currently staring at Ares’ crotch as if he wanted to touch it.

If he so much as lifted his fingers, I was going to throat punch him.

Luckily, Ares was able to pass by without getting molested and take her seat.

I was right behind her, sliding past him.

And the moment I got directly in front of the woman, our eyes met and held.

Her eyes were the color of root beer.

A deep, earthy brown with brilliant shades of tan and gold, making them appear almost to glow.

I found myself thinking that I really hated root beer, but I loved the woman’s eyes.

“Are you ever going to fuckin’ sit?” the guy that had leered at my sister asked.

      Shit.

      I was lingering.

But I was blaming that on the fact that the woman had captured me with her gaze and wouldn’t let me go.

At the man’s words, she did end up breaking the eye contact, but I felt like a piece of my soul had been taken right along with her gaze.

In half a second, I took in the rest of her appearance.

She had on short jean shorts that I could barely see due to her position, red and white Chucks that looked comfortable and worn, but still clean.

And she had a red t-shirt on that made the black curls that flowed around her face seem to pop in color.

She also had freckles on her nose and across her cheekbones right under her eyes that were the cutest thing I’d ever seen.

“Oh, look who’s up,” Ares muttered darkly.

I quickly found my seat and looked at where she was scowling, seeing Ryan on deck.

      My lips twitched.

Oh, this day was going to be fun.

      Saylor

      Worst. Date. Ever.

How the hell did stuff like this keep happening to me?

When I’d agreed to go on a date with Tad, he’d been normal. Fun. Amusing.

Then he’d picked me up, and it was like I’d gotten his evil twin instead of the man that I’d met at one of my father’s family club parties.

See, my father was a Dixie Warden. The Dixie Wardens were a motorcycle club out of Benton, Louisiana. A very popular, very well-known MC that was filled with members that were cops, firefighters, ex-military and current military.

Though my dad lived in Benton, Louisiana, they still tended to have events down here with their sister chapters. The event that I met Tad at being one of them.

Tad was the son of an Alabama chapter member.

      I’d met his parents.

      My dad had met Tad.

      He’d approved!

And then I get—whatever the hell Tad had turned into.

When I moved to Texas, I thought I was getting a fresh start.

New dating pool. No father constantly checking in, hovering, and generally making it hard to live my life as a single woman.

I began my own cake business part-time and was a newly graduated ultrasound technician.

      I had a good life.

Until it came to the dating game.

      Then I didn’t have a good life.

I had a piss poor excuse for one.

I should’ve expected it, to be honest.

I had shit luck when it came to dating.

“You want a drink?” Tad asked, sounding as if he was enjoying himself.

      He should be.

Every single woman that had walked by him or come close to him had drawn his attention.

I swore that he’d almost reached out and grabbed a few asses as if he couldn’t help himself.

Today when Tad had picked me up, I’d smiled at him and offered him a kiss on the cheek. He’d palmed my ass and pulled me in close to his obvious erection.

I’d yanked myself away as if I was on fire, disgust rising in my features.

When I’d asked him not long after not to take such liberties again, he’d laughed.

I should’ve just turned around and gone back inside my apartment building. Sadly, I hadn’t taken my own sage advice.

Which led me to now, sitting at a baseball game—I didn’t even like baseball—next to a man that had been flirting with the woman on his other side for the last twenty minutes.

I was fairly sure he’d gotten her number, too.

I rolled my eyes, contemplating calling for an Uber to take me home.

In fact, I looked over my shoulder to see how far away the exit was when I saw him walking down the steps toward me.

Our eyes met and held, even from the long distance that separated us, and I felt my heart start to beat in my chest like a roaring freight train barreling down at a railroad crossing.

I licked my lips and looked away, but it didn’t matter. I was more than aware of him.

I just knew that he was heading toward the seats that were next to me, too.

Sure, there were other seats spaced out around me. One here. One there.

But there weren’t two together, and in the brief glance that I’d taken of the man, he had someone in front of him.

That meant they would need two.

      Two.

The only two seats that were together side by side were the ones right next to me.

      Son of a biscuit eater.

I really, really didn’t do well with attractive men.

So much so, in fact, that I sometimes found it hard to breathe, let alone speak.

Honestly, that was probably why I had such a hard time dating.

If the man was attractive, then I was either a clammed-up shell of a person, or a chatty Cathy that said the stupidest things.<
    br />
“Excuse me,” a female’s voice said, finally making me look up. “Excuse me.”

The woman that was coming down the length of the aisle was gorgeous.

She had long, reddish-blonde hair, bright blue eyes, and beautiful pale skin that looked like she would burn in seconds.

But just as fast as I looked at her, I looked away.

Because the male coming our way had stolen my attention.

      I swallowed hard.

      Oh, God.

Oh, God. Oh, God. Oh, God.

      He. Was. So. Fucking. Hot.

And he…fuck me sideways, he was going to have to sit right next to me.

I swallowed hard and allowed my gaze to linger on the man’s thighs.

They were encased in a pair of navy-blue golf shorts—and the only reason I knew they were golf shorts was because I’d bought my dad the same pair for Father’s Day last year.

The man’s thighs were thick and filled out the fabric of the shorts well.

My eyes drug over the length of his lower body, skimming over the package at the apex of his thighs, and focusing on the man’s defined calves.

      Holy shit.

I’d never seen calves so defined in my life.

And why the hell was I so stuck on the man’s calves?

“Excuse me,” I heard muttered again.

That was when I allowed my gaze to leave the man’s calves, travel up the length of his torso, and stall out on his impressive chest.

He was wearing a black Grunt Style t-shirt that said ‘I serve no man.’

And I got to thinking about who he would serve.

Or maybe who he would pleasure…

      “Excuse me.”

I left the man’s defined chest that had nipples poking out in ninety-degree heat and finally allowed my gaze to settle on the man’s face.

Only to find him staring straight at me.

      He had red hair.

Beautiful red hair that was wavy and messy and styled all at once.

His eyes were blue and his face was tanned—well, about as tanned as a redhead could get.

He had a clean-cut beard, also red, and sexy pouty lips that looked like they would feel great on my…

“Are you ever going to fuckin’ sit?” Tad growled.

I closed my eyes and felt myself sink farther into my seat.

      God, he was so embarrassing.

When I opened my eyes again, the man had moved to take the seat beside me, and I felt his shoulders brush against mine.

      God, such broad fucking shoulders.
